| Etymology of generic noun |
Named for the Embera-Wounaan indigenous tribe, known also as the Chocó (name derived from their language, in combination with the old cichlid genus name Heros (meaning hero). Chocó is also the well known biogeographic area and area of endemism encompassing the distribution of the genus. The name is to be understood as the hero of the Choco.
